Patient Care Technician Adult Orthopedic Surgical Unit FT Day - Methodist

IU Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (also known as a Patient Care Assistant or PCA) for a full-time day position on the Adult Orthopedic Surgical Unit at Methodist. As a bedside caregiver, you will provide direct patient care and support the nursing team in delivering a high-quality patient experience.

Clinical Setting

You will work on an adult orthopedic surgical unit as part of an award-winning hospital system, providing care to patients recovering from orthopedic procedures and conditions.

Responsibilities

• Provide activities of daily living assistance to designated patients
• Assist patients with mobility, using appropriate safety measures such as gait belts and bed/chair alarms
• Obtain and report vital signs, reporting abnormalities or changes in patient behavior to the primary RN or charge nurse
• Provide drinks, assist with meal ordering, and encourage patient walking and activity
• Assist patients with baths and personal hygiene
• Provide clean linens and gowns
• Maintain continuous observation of patients, including suicide prevention monitoring
• Ensure patients' surroundings are clean and orderly
• Maintain patient safety by staying within arm's reach when assisting with movement
• Support the interdisciplinary patient care team under the direction of the registered nurse

Required Qualifications

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association, or attainment at completion of the IU Health PCA education program
• Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served
• Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
• Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to maintain constant mental awareness and withstand high levels of tension and stress
• Ability to maintain concentration when subjected to frequent and varied interruptions and variable noise levels
• Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in problem resolution
• Ability to set priorities and manage high workload within limited time frames
• Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software, and standards related to patient care activities performed by non-licensed roles
• Knowledge of infection control principles
• Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitious movements
• Ability to read and perform basic math
• Ability to organize tasks and attend to details
• Knowledge of personal hygiene principles and aseptic techniques to prevent infection

Licenses and Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association
• Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies
