The opportunity

Job Description

Join Children's National Hospital as a Patient Care Technician on 7 East, a pediatric unit where you will provide essential support to our nursing team and patients. This part-time position works 24 hours per week and offers the opportunity to deliver compassionate care to children and families in a collaborative healthcare environment.

In collaboration with the multidisciplinary healthcare team and under the direction of the Registered Nurse, you will perform basic nursing care activities, assist in maintaining a safe and clean patient care setting, support staff members, and help direct patient flow.

Clinical Setting

Children's National Hospital is located at 111 Michigan Avenue Northwest, Washington, DC 20010. You will work on 7 East, a pediatric inpatient unit.

Responsibilities

Patient Services - Admission

  • Orient families to the use of call lights, monitor, and unit
  • Set up monitor and alarms
  • Perform vital signs, height, weight, and head circumference measurements

Patient Services - Daily Living

  • Assist with activities of daily living including daily baths, skin care, mouth care, and peri-care
  • Ensure proper nutrition as ordered (nasogastric, gastric tube, or tray)
  • Provide care of tube feeding and feeding of patients
  • Apply skin creams as directed by the RN
  • Collect cultures, urine, and stool samples

Direct Patient Care

  • Recognize and report pain and skin breakdown
  • Prioritize tasks and special requests from the RN
  • Assist in performance of tracheostomy care and external ventricular drain (EVD) care
  • Assist with central line dressing, pin care, cast and traction care, and care for dying patients
  • Assist with preparation of rooms for discharge and admission
  • Maintain a neat and orderly environment to support patient flow
  • Obtain equipment and supplies and maintain PAR levels

Monitor Surveillance

  • Observe and alert the RN when there are monitor deviations
  • When assigned to monitor bank, follow monitor guidelines regarding dress code and professionalism

Infection Control

  • Care for isolation patients
  • Adhere to hand washing before and after every patient contact
  • Clean equipment after each patient's use

Documentation

  • Document on nursing database, flow sheets, and vital signs in a timely manner
  • Notify the appropriate charge nurse in the computer or chart as suitable

Communication and Professionalism

  • Communicate effectively with the RN and team members to achieve goals
  • Report any changes and abnormal findings
  • Participate in beginning and end of shift reporting
  • Maintain professional relationships with patients and families
  • Resolve conflict with co-workers appropriately
  • Support a family-centered care environment
  • Communicate with the RN on all patient care activities at least every hour
  • Notify the charge nurse when leaving and returning to the unit for any reason
  • Demonstrate non-judgmental behavior

Shared Leadership

  • Keep informed about council meetings and unit issues
  • Participate in shared decision making through contributing to unit discussion
  • Support shared leadership decisions

Safety

  • Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance
  • Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation
  • Stop in the face of uncertainty and take time to resolve the situation
  • Demonstrate accurate, clear, and timely verbal and written communication
  • Actively promote safety for patients, families, visitors, and co-workers
  • Attend carefully to important details by practicing Stop, Think, Act, and Review to self-check behavior and performance

Schedule

This is a part-time position working 24 hours per week.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) certification
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) certification
  • Basic computer skills including typing, use of mouse, and email
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique
  • Basic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
  • Human relations and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in pediatrics
  • One semester of clinical experience completed at an accredited school of nursing or military corpsman training

Compensation

Pay Range: $21.37 - $42.22 per hour

The exact pay rate will be based on a variety of factors including current market conditions, organizational needs, prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications. This base salary range does not include the comprehensive benefits package or any additional compensation for which this position may be eligible.
