Patient Care Technician - 5E Neuro/Stroke/Tele - Nights

Swedish Hospital in Chicago is seeking a Patient Care Technician to provide direct patient care on the 5E Neuro/Stroke/Tele unit. In this role, you will work the night shift (7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.) supporting the clinical nursing team in delivering care to patients with neurological, stroke, and telemetry monitoring needs. You will assist with activities of daily living, patient hygiene, mobility, and vital sign monitoring while maintaining a safe and clean patient care environment.

Clinical Setting

You will work on a specialized neuro/stroke/telemetry unit at Swedish Hospital, a Magnet-recognized acute care facility. You may float to other inpatient units as needed.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager and RN
• Assist patients with hygiene, elimination needs, ambulation, and range of motion based on their level of assistance required
• Set up patient rooms for new admissions, including placement of ECG cables, leads, SpO2 cables, and disposable blood pressure cuffs
• Assist the RN in admitting new patients by attaching ECG cables and pulse oximetry and taking initial vital signs
• Help patients with nutritional needs and eating as required
• Accurately document vital signs (temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure) and point-of-care blood glucose monitoring (Accu-Check) results in the electronic medical record
• Perform 12-lead ECGs on patients as directed by the RN
• Perform Accu-Check quality controls daily at midnight
• Empty, measure, and record output from Foley bags and colostomy bags as directed by the RN
• Perform rounding and repositioning with assigned patients every two hours
• Apply standard fall and high-risk precautions based on patient need and RN direction
• Use standard and special precautions with all patients, including proper personal protective equipment
• Maintain proper patient handling techniques and demonstrate safe use of lifting and patient safety equipment
• Communicate regularly with the RN regarding changes in vital signs, patient observations, and family concerns
• Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality
• Proactively organize and stock the nursing unit with patient care supplies
• Properly clean all multi-use equipment between patient care
• Gather required linen before bathing or cleaning patients
• Empty trash from patient rooms, nursing station, hallway, medication room, and store room at the end of shift
• If no PCT is scheduled for the next shift, check vital signs on all patients at the end of shift (0700 or 1900)
• Provide hand-off report to the oncoming PCT before leaving at the end of shift
• Communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare team members
• Follow all policies and procedures related to patient and staff safety
• Maintain clinical competency as tested annually by Nursing Education

Schedule

• Full-time position (36 hours per week)
• Night shift: 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
• Every other weekend required
• Rotating holidays required

Compensation

• Hourly pay range: $18.84 to $27.32 (based on expertise and years of experience)
• No sign-on bonus

Required Qualifications

• CNA certification, or successful completion of an accredited nursing assistant training course, or minimum six months of previous patient care experience, or equivalent, or completion of one nursing clinical rotation
• American Heart Association CPR certification
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Ability to interact effectively with others
• Ability to uphold confidentiality standards
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
