UPMC East is seeking a Casual Patient Care Technician to join the 5 East Oncology Unit. This role is ideal for nursing students looking to build clinical skills and confidence in an oncology setting. The position requires working 36 hours every 6 weeks, offering a manageable schedule that fits around classes and clinicals.
Clinical Setting
You will work on a dedicated oncology unit providing patient care and supporting department services in accordance with established policies and procedures under the direction of nurses and physicians.
Responsibilities
- Assist with patient procedures and activities of daily living, including bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients
- Provide physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies
- Perform point of care testing, including blood glucose monitoring
- Obtain weights, vital signs, and measure intake and output
- Apply and reapply telemetry monitors
- Implement HAC and PSI prevention measures, including TEDs and SCDs
- Perform simple dressings and placement and removal of restraints
- Conduct bladder scans and collect all specimen types
- Provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status
- Perform at least one or more advanced skills based on department operational need: phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia interpretation, 12-lead EKG, or NG tube clamping and removal
- Respond to call lights and telephones, pass meal trays, and transport patients
- Document in the medical record according to established procedures
- Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department
- Establish professional and respectful interpersonal relationships with colleagues and other departments
- Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team
- Support department-based projects and quality initiatives
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One of the following:
- One year of general healthcare experience, OR
- Six months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion, OR
- Enrollment in a PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
- Completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field
- Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class
- Successful completion of basic information system training
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
- CPR certification required based on AHA standards (both didactic and skills demonstration components) within 30 days of hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
- Act 34 clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Microcomputer experience
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program
- ACLS certification
Schedule
Casual position requiring 36 hours every 6 weeks.
Additional Requirements
- Access to medications is limited to the distribution of medication to the nurse
- All competencies must be achieved
- Title will be determined based on candidate's individual experience
