Job Description
Join University of Iowa Health Care as a Patient Care Technician on the 3W Medical Inpatient unit at our downtown campus, a 194-bed hospital providing community-based care with access to system-wide expertise and resources. Under direct nursing supervision, you will assist the nursing team in delivering multiple types of patient care in inpatient settings, performing a wide variety of nursing procedures and supporting patients' physical comfort and hygiene needs.
Responsibilities
- Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure
- Perform medical asepsis when executing skills and tasks including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, and care for medically isolated patients
- Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, specimen collection, and application of binders and braces
- Execute special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge, including phlebotomy, ECG lead and 12-lead placement, and brace and pin site care
- Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges
- Provide direct patient care for personal hygiene and comfort
- Turn, position, and ambulate patients
- Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies
- Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patient intake
- Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output
- Participate in nursing care conferences and report pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge
- Provide patient comfort measures through social interactions
- Share responsibility for preparation, proper use, and care of equipment and supplies, and for unit neatness and cleanliness
- Assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for diagnostic or treatment procedures
- Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards using approved disinfectants and cleaning products
- Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units
Required Qualifications
- Ability to read, write, and follow instructions
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, family members, and healthcare staff verbally, electronically, and in writing
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
- Ability to provide care with regard to patient condition and age
- Knowledge of principles of sanitation and health hazards
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships
- Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments, and supplies
- Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records
- Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills
Schedule
- Part-time position at 60% time
- 12-hour night shifts: Saturday and Sunday, 1830 to 0700
- Evening and night shift differentials apply
