Job Description

Join Carilion Clinic as a Patient Care Technician on the 10 West Unit, a 28-bed Medical-Surgical unit primarily serving the geriatric population with a wide range of medical diagnoses. In this part-time position, you will provide essential nursing care and support to patients while working as part of a collaborative healthcare team committed to clinical excellence and professional development.

Clinical Setting

The 10 West Unit is a Medical-Surgical unit that primarily serves geriatric patients. The care environment focuses on assisting patients with activities of daily living and maintaining a safe, comfortable space as they transition home or to skilled-care facilities. You may be required to support multiple nursing units within the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic nursing care including taking blood pressure, checking oxygen levels and temperature, and assisting patients with bathing, meals, toileting, ambulation, and other basic needs
  • Assist patients of all sexes and genders with activities of daily living
  • Provide one-on-one care for patients on suicide or safety precautions
  • Transport patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment within the facility
  • Document and report patient observations to licensed staff
  • Operate and maintain knowledge of the electronic medical record (EMR) and assist with chart audits
  • Review medical records for outstanding orders and notify nurses of stat orders and medication changes
  • Process and clean equipment between patients and gather necessary supplies
  • Lead streamlined admission, transfer, and discharge processes with focus on patient experience
  • Welcome and assist patients and visitors; serve as the face of the unit and model service excellence
  • Answer phones with excellent telephone etiquette and route calls appropriately
  • Monitor cleanliness of waiting and break rooms and perform safety and environmental rounds
  • Order department and unit supplies and equipment and maintain organization
  • Participate in unit quality surveillance activities and shared governance
  • May lead unit huddles and participate in interdepartmental patient rounds
  • Assist with customer service including way-finding and making meaningful connections with patients and visitors
  • Participate in the sitter process when competencies are appropriate
  • Assist with maintaining regulatory compliance including refrigerator checks, glucose meter maintenance, equipment room storage, and code cart checks
  • May perform phlebotomy, nonsterile wound care dressings, saline lock replacement and removal, and colostomy bag changes when competency-appropriate

Schedule

This is a part-time position working the day shift (8 am to 5 pm). You will work every other weekend and rotating holidays. Successful candidates must be able to attend required orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm for the first two weeks. These orientation classes are mandatory.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for the position
  • AHA BLS-HCP certification required within 6 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in direct patient care
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position requires the ability to perform responsibilities in a fast-paced environment using prioritization and time management skills. Physical requirements include lifting, prolonged periods of standing, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking. You may be exposed to infectious diseases, biohazardous and hazardous materials, including regulated medical wastes, and combative patients. Prolonged periods of sitting, visualizing a computer screen, and using a keyboard may be necessary.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation Range: $17.39 - $24.35 per hour. Employee pay is based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience.
