The Pathology Patient Care Technician performs phlebotomy, order entry, specimen processing, and clerical tasks in the Central Receiving and Processing section of the Pathology Department. This is a fast-paced role that requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently while supporting a team environment. You will also train new staff, manage specimen defects, and process specimens for reference laboratory referral.
Responsibilities
- Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection following hospital and departmental patient identification policies
- Verify that two patient identifiers match on the patient's armband, labels, and requisition prior to performing phlebotomy
- Order, label, and process specimens for laboratory testing
- Process and package specimens for shipping to the Main Campus and other reference laboratories
- Independently investigate and resolve discrepancies with patient demographics and OPTIO labels by contacting personnel in other departments, nurses, and Admissions staff using the EPM system
- Communicate and interact professionally with patients, families, and staff
- Demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge of procedures and equipment; maintain skills and demonstrate competency through performance, documentation, and observation by supervisory staff
- Perform and participate in proficiency testing programs to validate competency as required
- Train new employees and evaluate the competency of other Pathology Patient Care Liaison staff in phlebotomy, order entry, clerical and computer functions, centrifugation, labeling, and other procedures
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One year of phlebotomy or specimen processing experience
