Part-Time School Nurse

This part-time school nurse position supports the educational mission by promoting and protecting the health of students and staff. Working nine months (189 days) per year, you will provide comprehensive health services in a school setting, including health assessments, screenings, medication administration, and management of students with chronic health conditions.

Responsibilities

• Promote and protect the optimal health status of students and staff
• Perform medical procedures within the scope of the Alabama Nurse Practice Act
• Conduct health assessments and obtain health histories for students with special health needs
• Provide and evaluate health screenings including vision, hearing, and scoliosis according to established policies
• Observe students for developmental, behavioral, and health patterns to inform nursing assessments and educational plans
• Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized health plans for students
• Create Individualized Health Plans (IHP) and Emergency Action Plans (EAP) for students with chronic health conditions
• Initiate referrals to parents, school personnel, and community health resources as needed
• Provide ongoing health consultation with students, parents, school personnel, and health agencies
• Administer medications to students and delegate to trained unlicensed personnel according to Alabama Board of Nursing guidelines
• Participate as the health specialist on child education evaluation teams to develop Individual Education Plans (IEP)
• Provide support for medically fragile students
• Promote and assist in controlling communicable disease
• Monitor student immunization status according to Alabama Immunization Law
• Conduct early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases
• Promote standard precautions among school staff
• Serve as a resource for health education
• Assist with staff development through workshops, institutes, faculty meetings, and individual conferences
• Provide health counseling for staff and promote wellness programs
• Maintain appropriate documentation of medications and health room visits using electronic medical records in accordance with the Alabama Nurse Practice Act
• Engage in continuous quality improvement of school health services
• Communicate accurately and effectively with students, parents, staff, and community while protecting student privacy and maintaining confidentiality
• Attend professional meetings for professional development according to Board of Nursing policy and district requirements
• Perform other duties as needed

Required Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
• Current RN license from the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN)
• Current BLS certification
• Three to five years of experience in school nursing, pediatrics, public health, or acute care setting

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Education
