The opportunity

Job Description

Join UPMC Presbyterian's 8G unit as a Part-Time Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician specializing in neuro trauma care. This 23-bed progressive care unit focuses on neurologic and neurosurgical patients, including step-down admissions for stroke and trauma patients transitioning from intensive care. You will work directly with nurses and physicians to deliver high-quality patient care while gaining hands-on experience in a specialized clinical setting.

Clinical Setting

8G is a comprehensive stroke and trauma unit that provides progressive care for neurologic and neurosurgical patients. The unit manages step-down admissions for patients transitioning from intensive care following stroke or trauma events.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver routine patient care and support services following established policies and procedures
  • Assist with activities of daily living including bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning, and blood glucose monitoring
  • Take vital signs, perform simple dressings, 12-lead EKGs, bladder scans, and collect specimens
  • Report equipment malfunctions and communicate effectively with the healthcare team
  • Ensure patient and workplace safety while demonstrating professionalism and maintaining productive relationships
  • Provide patient care, support therapies, and assist with instruction under RN guidance
  • Adhere to all policies, safety standards, and document patient information appropriately
  • Complete tasks in a timely manner, including clerical functions as needed
  • Work under the direction of nurses and/or physicians to maintain high-quality patient care at all times

Schedule

This is a part-time position requiring a minimum commitment of 24 hours per week. You will work rotating shifts including daytime, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts. Expect 12-hour shifts, with the possibility of a mix of 8-hour and 12-hour shifts.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of UPMC Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Technician, or EIC training program
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required based on AHA standards (must include both didactic and skills demonstration components within 30 days of hire)
  • Act 34 clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Paramedic certification
  • Current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program

Additional Requirements

All hired candidates are required to complete a mandatory training course with full attendance expected for the entire duration. Access to medications is limited to the distribution of medication to the nurse.

Compensation

Entry level hourly rate is $19.40. Job title and salary will be based upon qualifications and career ladder requirements.
