Join our healthcare team at Otero County Prison in Chaparral, New Mexico, as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. In this part-time role, you will provide direct patient care to incarcerated individuals, working under the direction of a physician while exercising independent clinical judgment. You will diagnose and treat patients, manage medical conditions, and ensure compliance with correctional healthcare standards and accreditation requirements.
Clinical Setting
This position is based in a correctional healthcare environment where you will work with an incarcerated patient population. You will collaborate with the facility medical director and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive medical services while maintaining security and confidentiality protocols.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care, evaluate outcomes, and adjust treatment processes to ensure optimal care
- Diagnose and treat patients appropriately, exercising independent judgment and initiating effective courses of action
- Monitor medical conditions of patients and report and document changes appropriate to scope of practice
- Perform CPR when necessary
- Perform daily information rounds and prepare notes on residents assigned to medical housing
- Perform basic procedures including thermal applications, non-sterile soaks, application of dressings and casts
- Order diagnostic and therapeutic services and assess efficiency, documenting results and making needed changes
- Consult with the facility medical director in a collaborative relationship
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive charting on patient medical records
- Closely monitor all potential catastrophic illnesses
- Follow established departmental policies, procedures, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards
- Comply with all applicable pharmacy regulations, especially those covering controlled substances
- Maintain security and confidentiality of all patient medical records and observe applicable HIPAA rules
- Facilitate NCCHC/ACA accreditation of the medical program by providing required efficiency and approved appropriate medical services
- Comply with all applicable regulations, laws, policies, standards and contracts
- Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters, including administering basic emergency medical aid and physically removing people from dangerous situations
- Maintain equipment and supplies
- Attend scheduled staff meetings and promote communications and proper flow of relevant information in the medical unit
- Enhance professional development through participation in educational programs, in-service training and workshops
- Maintain accountability of residents and property and adhere to safety practices
- Promote the development of positive social skills among staff and detainees through modeling appropriate behaviors
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
- Current licensure in the state of New Mexico as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
- Current CPR certification
- Valid driver's license in the state of New Mexico or Texas with an acceptable driving record, unless waived by management
- All education related to licensure
- Any additional licenses or certifications required for the position (such as DEA registration)

- Two to five years of experience, preferably in a correctional environment or emergency medicine

Compensation
- Annual salary: $107,120
