Fresenius Medical Care is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN/LVN) to provide direct patient care in an outpatient hemodialysis setting. As part of the hemodialysis healthcare team, you will deliver safe and effective dialysis therapy to assigned patients under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, working with one of the nation's largest providers of renal care serving more than 135,000 patients across 1,800 clinics.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care for assigned patients
  • Perform all technical aspects of dialysis procedures as prescribed and monitor treatments in accordance with the current treatment plan
  • Monitor and document dialysis treatment parameters on dialysis flow sheets and in individual patient records
  • Report significant changes in patient condition or equipment problems to the supervisor
  • Administer intravenous medication in accordance with physician orders and state nurse practice laws
  • Perform and document pre-, interim, and post-treatment review of patient condition
  • Assist in developing and implementing teaching plans to educate patients and families regarding end-stage renal disease, dialysis therapy, diet, and medications
  • Initiate basic CPR measures in the event of cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest and respond to emergency situations related to dialysis treatment
  • Safely operate all dialysis-related equipment according to proper procedures and provide minor troubleshooting when necessary
  • Ensure a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in the dialysis facility treatment area
  • Address all blood spills immediately according to Fresenius bloodborne pathogen control policies
  • Operate all emergency equipment effectively in accordance with standard operation procedures
  • Participate in staff meetings and patient care plan meetings
  • Acquire knowledge in current dialysis practice through participation in scheduled in-service classes
  • Act as a resource person for other staff members and assist with care plan coordination with physicians, dietitians, and social workers
  • Provide coverage at area facilities during times of short-staffing or as required

Clinical Setting

You will work in an outpatient hemodialysis facility with air temperature control and moderate noise levels. The position involves frequent, prolonged periods of standing and bending. Day-to-day work includes desk and computer work as well as direct patient interaction. You may be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases and materials.

Physical Demands

This position regularly involves heavy lifting and moving of patients and assisting with ambulation. Equipment aids and coworkers may provide assistance. You may occasionally be required to move machines and equipment weighing up to 200 pounds with assistance and may lift chemical water solutions of up to 30 pounds as high as 5 feet. The position requires travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community. Travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings may be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing (LPN or LVN)
  • Current appropriate state licensure
  • Successfully complete CPR certification
  • Successfully complete a training course in the theory and practice of hemodialysis
  • Successfully complete the Nurses Technical Training Program upon hire or soon thereafter
  • Meet the necessary requirements of Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment
  • Ability to provide coverage at area facilities during times of short-staffing or as required
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
