Outpatient Infusion RN (IV RN): Oncology

MercyOne North Iowa Cancer Center is seeking an Outpatient Infusion RN to administer chemotherapy, anti-cancer drugs, cardiac infusions, COVID-related infusions, and other outpatient injections/infusions. You will work in a specialized oncology outpatient setting, providing direct patient care while maintaining professional nursing standards and supporting a safe environment for patients and staff.

Clinical Setting

The MercyOne North Iowa Cancer Center is a comprehensive oncology facility designed to provide a broad spectrum of cancer treatment services in one accessible location. The center is staffed by highly specialized professionals with extensive experience in oncology care, including state-of-the-art therapies, personalized medicine, surgery, clinical research, and support services.

Responsibilities

• Administer chemotherapy, anti-cancer drugs, cardiac infusions, COVID infusions, and other outpatient infusions/injections with accuracy
• Assess patients and identify common, complex, and unusual physical and psychosocial needs
• Provide accurate and timely documentation of all outpatient infusion procedures and patient information
• Triage patient phone calls and assess level of care needed, referring to physicians or providing nursing intervention as appropriate
• Guide and direct patient care activities using clinical and critical thinking skills and evidence-based practice
• Provide or facilitate learning opportunities to meet educational needs of patients and families
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to achieve desired patient care outcomes
• Support departmental and organizational budgets by accurately capturing all charges generated in the outpatient infusion area
• Maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, medical staff, and personnel from other departments
• Demonstrate flexibility in job responsibilities and assist others as needed
• Support technology and process changes in the evolving healthcare environment
• Participate in problem-solving activities and process improvement initiatives that promote better patient care and clinical outcomes
• Manage work hours and staffing to volumes, keeping overtime to a minimum
• Attend and participate in department staff huddles and committee meetings
• Participate in peer evaluations, self-evaluations, and goal setting
• Provide backup support to other RNs assisting providers in patient care activities such as consultations, exams, procedures, and treatments
• Develop and review departmental policies, procedures, and nursing standards of care
• Maintain department confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations
• Participate in medical center and departmental education programs
• Perform other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager, or department head

Schedule

• Full-time position
• 36 hours per week
• 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
• No weekends
• No holidays

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of a professional nursing program
• Current RN license in the state of Iowa
• Must complete and successfully pass ACLS certification within 6 months of hire
• Must complete Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Cancer Basics course prior to administering chemotherapy
• Must complete ONS Chemotherapy Biotherapy: Fundamentals of Administration course and successfully complete Chemotherapy Skills Checklists prior to administering chemotherapy
• After 9 months of employment, must successfully complete the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certificate course and renew every 2 years

Preferred Qualifications

• Chemotherapy and cardiac drug administration experience
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in an oncology inpatient or outpatient healthcare setting
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in a healthcare setting (inpatient, outpatient, home care, hospice, or clinic)
• OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) certification within 2 years of employment
• Current ACLS certification or willingness to obtain certification within 6 months of hire
• Completion of necessary cardiac dysrhythmias and management courses within 3 months of hire
