Operating Room RN (Per Diem)

Shields Surgery Center in Medford, MA is seeking an Operating Room RN for a per diem position with Monday-Friday daytime availability. You will provide comprehensive nursing care and leadership in a collaborative surgical environment, working with physicians and multidisciplinary caregivers to promote patient health and restore wellness across all ages, cultures, and backgrounds.

Clinical Setting

This role is based in an ambulatory surgery center where you will deliver direct and indirect nursing care utilizing the nursing process. You will determine nursing care objectives within the framework of the physician's surgical plan, patient needs, standards of nursing practice, legal regulations, and facility policies.

Responsibilities

• Provide peri-operative nursing care to facilitate a positive surgical experience for patients
• Perform peri-operative assessments of surgical patients based on procedure type, anesthesia, protocols, and individual patient needs
• Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, families, and friends
• Implement proper clinical protocols that ensure patient safety, comfort, and quality of care
• Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills while assessing patient understanding and providing information and emotional support
• Anticipate potential patient problems and take preventive measures
• Ensure compliance with established standards, policies, procedures, and best practices
• Document patient care information according to established procedures and validate achievement of desired outcomes
• Communicate verbally and in writing to develop and disseminate the patient's plan of care to all necessary caregivers
• Facilitate continuity of patient care through verbal reports on patient status to receiving caregivers
• Protect patients and co-workers by adhering to infection control policies, medication administration procedures, and controlled substance regulations
• Delegate patient care activities to support personnel according to their level of knowledge and expertise
• Assist with stripping, cleaning, and setting up the OR suite for own and other cases with efficiency and speed
• Assume responsibility for availability of supplies and proper functioning of equipment necessary for patient care
• Contribute to supply stocking and housekeeping to maintain a safe and clean working environment
• Demonstrate willingness to cross-train and float when opportunities arise
• Contribute to meeting fluctuating staffing needs through flexibility in assignments and work schedule
• Actively engage in staff meetings, department meetings, in-services, and educational requirements
• Maintain cooperative relationships among all caregivers by communicating information, responding to requests, building rapport, and participating in team problem-solving
• Promote teamwork by assisting with precepting of new caregivers
• Identify areas of conflict, intervene effectively, or seek assistance in conflict resolution
• Actively work to promote and maintain an organizational culture that enhances the facility's standing as the best place to work and receive care

Required Qualifications

• Completion of a minimum of two years of education at an accredited School of Nursing to be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse
• Minimum of one year of experience in Ambulatory Surgery, Outpatient Surgery, or OR nursing
• Currently holds American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) or AHA approved equivalent
• American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required within one year of hire
• Currently holds a nursing license in the state of Massachusetts, free of sanctions and disciplinary actions
• Ability to lift 10 lbs. overhead; lift and carry 15 lbs.; push/pull 20 lbs. cart
• Ability to lift and carry 25-35 lbs.; push/pull 50-100 lbs. (empty bed, stretcher)
• Ability to lift and carry 40-50 lbs.; push/pull 150-200 lbs. (patients on bed, stretcher); lateral transfer 150-200 lbs. (patients)
• Ability to lift over 50 lbs.; carry 80 lbs. a distance of 30 feet; push/pull greater than 200 lbs. (patients on bed, stretcher)

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BS Nursing)
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification, or willingness to obtain within six months of request

Compensation

Pay range for this position is $48-$66 per hour plus benefits. Individual pay is based on skills, experience, and other relevant factors.
