Banner Desert Medical Center is seeking an Operating Room Surgical Technologist for weekend shifts in Mesa, Arizona. This position involves selecting and placing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgery, scrubbing cases, and providing instruments and sterile supplies to support surgical procedures. You will work in a state-of-the-art facility with 28 operating rooms, including specialized trauma, pediatric, robotic, and cardiovascular suites, performing approximately 22,000 surgeries annually.

Clinical Setting

Banner Desert Medical Center is one of Arizona's largest and most comprehensive hospitals with over 700 licensed beds, including more than 100 dedicated to children and 76 dedicated to the NICU. The facility is recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of Phoenix's Best Hospitals and by US News as a High Performing Hospital in Procedure/Condition Category. The operating room department includes advanced technologies such as da Vinci dV5 robots, NICO, Mako robot, and Stealth guided brain surgery. Surgical service lines include general, gynecology, urology, robotics, orthopedics, neurosurgery, plastics, and Level I trauma for both pediatric and adult patients.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for surgical procedures by pulling appropriate instruments and supplies, ensuring good working order, reviewing case carts for correct contents, and troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment
  • Anticipate surgeon needs by passing instruments and retracting tissue
  • Maintain competency to scrub in a minimum of two surgical specialties
  • Demonstrate principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout procedures
  • Dispose of sharps and trash appropriately, participate in counting sharps, instruments, and sponges, and prepare instruments for cleaning following each case
  • Ensure accuracy of surgeon preference cards and pick lists
  • Assist with operating room turnover between cases, including stocking, replenishing supplies, and cleaning
  • Participate in or lead training and orientation of surgical technology staff and students as assigned
  • Follow safety procedures regarding medication labeling, specimen handling, sharps handling, time-out procedures, radiation and laser safety, and infection control
  • Participate in emergency call rotation
  • May provide administrative support to the department

Schedule

This is a full-time weekend position working Saturday and Sunday, 6:40 AM to 7:10 PM. No call required. Full-time positions with various weekday shifts are also available. Holiday requirements apply.

Compensation

Weekend shift premium of 30% applies to this position. Flat rate $3/hour weekend shift differential and 18% night shift differential when applicable.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Certified as a surgical technologist OR two to three years of experience in a surgical technologist role
  • State registration with regulatory agency where applicable
  • Ability to scrub proficiently on a minimum of two surgical specialties
  • Manual dexterity and ability to maintain professional decorum in highly stressful emergent situations
  • Ability to be conscientious, organized, and orderly
  • Ability to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient
  • Commitment to staying abreast of new developments in the field
