The opportunity

Job Description

The Operating Room Liaison (ORL) in Sterile Processing serves as a clinical bridge between the Operating Room, Endoscopy, and Sterile Processing Department at UVA Medical Center. This role provides on-site technical and operational support to ensure surgical procedures run smoothly and efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of instrument and equipment management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site support for surgical procedures, including equipment setup, troubleshooting, calibration, and functional checks
  • Offer point-of-use guidance to OR and Endoscopy teams regarding care, handling, and transport of instruments and scopes
  • Serve as a day-to-day clinical resource for physicians, nurses, and technologists regarding device use, workflow optimization, and best practices
  • Assist OR and Endoscopy teams with room readiness, case flow, and equipment availability to minimize delays and cancellations
  • Act as the primary liaison between OR and Sterile Processing Department to ensure seamless instrument and scope reprocessing workflows
  • Coordinate instrument and endoscope inventories, tray accuracy, and case-cart readiness
  • Identify and escalate issues related to missing instruments, damaged equipment, or reprocessing bottlenecks

Clinical Setting

UVA Medical Center is a nationally recognized academic health system and Magnet-recognized medical center with a Level 1 trauma center. The facility is designated as a National Cancer Institute cancer center and includes a children's hospital with multiple nationally ranked specialties.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 2 years of experience as an Endoscopy Technician, Sterile Processing Technician, or Surgical Technologist

Preferred Qualifications

  • CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician), CSPDT (Certified Surgical Processing and Distribution Technician), or CER (Certified Endoscopy Reprocessor) certification

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

This position requires prolonged sitting and standing, frequent bending, stooping, traveling, and reaching (overhead and extensive). You must have proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills; strong attention to detail; and legible writing ability. The role requires the ability to lift, push, and pull 25-50 pounds. You will work in an environment with fumes, chemicals, vibrations, heat, noise, blood and body fluids, and potential exposure to infectious disease.

Compensation

The pay range for this role is $19.88 to $30.81 USD per hour. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and education.
