The opportunity

Job Description

The Operating Room Assistant is a member of the operative nursing team at Wayne UNC Health Care who contributes to the comfort and well-being of patients by performing specifically assigned tasks in the operating room environment. This per diem position offers variable scheduling with a standard of 4 hours per week and requires flexibility to work a variety of shifts to ensure adequate coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Provide skilled, safe, quality patient care within scope of practice
  • Transport patients within, from, and to operating rooms according to policy
  • Identify and prepare patients for surgical cases based on individual needs
  • Assist in transporting case carts to the decontamination area
  • Transport specimens according to established policies and guidelines
  • Obtain blood and blood products from the Blood Bank per policy
  • Monitor fluid and warmer temperatures per protocol and maintain adequate stock
  • Apply knowledge of proper patient positioning and prepping techniques to assist surgical team members
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of medical gas cylinders and demonstrate knowledge of their care and handling
  • Prepare and transport specialized equipment; perform cleaning of equipment as needed
  • Perform daily cleaning in assigned areas according to established policies, procedures, and schedules
  • Follow established policies and procedures for transporting patients to the morgue
  • Respond appropriately to emergency and code situations while remaining calm and working effectively under stress
  • Apply knowledge of standard precautions and routinely use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure
  • Contribute to operating room efficiency, effectiveness, quality, and safety through cooperative, respectful, and ethical teamwork
  • Demonstrate appropriate interaction with patients and provide age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and ethical care
  • Complete continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements
  • Present and maintain a professional demeanor at all times, exhibit high standards of customer service, and offer reasonable solutions for problems

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of state-approved Level I or II Nurse Aide training and competency evaluation program or equivalent
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I (or II) registry
  • Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support
  • Ability to stand, walk, and meet the physical demands of the position for the duration of the shift
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Basic proficiency with computers
  • Ability to maintain collaborative relationships with teammates, supervisors, administration, providers, and the general public
  • Ability to manage many priority activities simultaneously
  • Good interpersonal and customer service skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience in a healthcare setting

Schedule

  • Per diem position with variable scheduling
  • Flexibility required to work a variety of shifts
  • Onsite at Wayne Medical Center

Additional Requirements

  • If driving a Wayne UNC vehicle, must be 21 years old and have a motor vehicle record approved by Risk Management
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is not required for the position itself
