Elmwood Orthopedic Hospital is seeking an Operating Room Assistant (ORA) to provide technical support services and assist with the delivery of patient care as a member of the surgical team. In this role, you will support surgical procedures, transport patients, maintain clean and safe surgical environments, and assist with patient care and room turnover.
Responsibilities
- Perform indirect and direct patient care duties
- Maintain a clean, safe environment in patient care and support surgical areas
- Function as a member of the surgical team during procedures
- Transport patients throughout the facility
- Assist with patient care and room turnover
- Run errands and relay messages
- Maintain required clinical knowledge, technical skills, training, and credentials
- Adapt to rapid day-to-day changes in the department and unit
- Adapt behavior and communication to specific patient populations, including respect for privacy and appropriate introduction methods
- Remain knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements applicable to the assigned area
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards
- Report any known or suspected unethical or questionable behaviors, patient or employee safety concerns, or privacy violations
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience functioning calmly in pressure situations
- Experience working with little supervision
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
- Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to present information clearly and professionally
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to use good judgment and handle difficult situations
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Ability to move throughout the department and facility
Preferred Qualifications
- Six months of patient care experience
- Operating room experience
Physical and Environmental Demands
This position involves very heavy work, requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue. The incumbent works in a patient care area with direct patient contact and may work with specimens that could contain communicable diseases, creating an occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases. There may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the healthcare environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning, and/or disposal of contaminated waste.
