Nurse Practitioner (School of Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine)

The Division of Emergency Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University seeks a Nurse Practitioner for the Pediatric Emergency Department. This clinical operations position provides direct patient care in a 24/7 emergency setting serving pediatric patients, including those with trauma. You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team managing acute pediatric emergencies and coordinating care across multiple specialties.

Clinical Setting

You will work in the Pediatric Emergency Department at the School of Medicine Campus in Baltimore, Maryland. This is a high-acuity environment requiring flexibility across all shift types and times.

Responsibilities

• Perform patient-oriented clinical tasks including patient interviews, medical history taking, physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, making tentative diagnoses, prescribing treatments, and performing appropriate procedures
• Educate patients and families to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health, and manage acute or chronic illness
• Ensure timely return of patient and physician calls and appropriate documentation in the Electronic Patient Record (EPR)
• Function as a liaison between Pediatric Emergency Medicine, primary care providers, nurse case managers, inpatient personnel, and other healthcare specialists
• Triage pages and forward detailed messages to appropriate physicians as needed
• Answer patient questions regarding physician instructions, medications, prescription refills, and other clinical care aspects
• Retrieve diagnostic results, coordinate physician sign-off, and communicate results to patients according to clinic protocol
• Assess and manage follow-up plans specific to patient age
• Provide clear, complete, and accurate instructions regarding health maintenance, disease prevention, and home health care under physician supervision
• Record and document health assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate, and expedite required services
• Serve as a resource to healthcare staff and implement programs to improve patient and family health status, considering developmental needs
• Request consultations with appropriate departments when necessary
• Maintain current clinical practice through continuing education
• Attend all departmental meetings and assist with educational mission as needed
• Manage time effectively and maintain professional relationships and interpersonal interactions

Required Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Nursing
• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
• Nurse Practitioner (NP) certification
• Current NP license in Maryland or other state where practicing
• Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification
• Completion of Johns Hopkins credentialing process prior to start date
• Must maintain current licensure and certification throughout employment

Schedule and Employment

• Full-time position, essential staff
• Sunday through Saturday schedule with varying days and hours
• 24/7 service requires flexibility to work holidays, weekends, days, evenings, and night shifts
• On-site work: 90-100% of hours worked on-site

Compensation and Benefits

• Starting salary range: $112,572 - $152,900 annually ($124,000 targeted; commensurate with experience)
