Nurse Practitioner

San Diego State University Student Health Services is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to provide comprehensive primary care to SDSU students. Working under the supervision of the Student Health Services Lead Physician, you will deliver high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective medical care in a collaborative interdisciplinary healthcare environment.

Clinical Setting

Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students through a range of programs and services. The department provides care through board-certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners, nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. On-site services include laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, dental, eye, and orthopedic clinics, as well as health education, osteopathic manipulative treatment, and psychiatry services.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive primary care by conducting patient evaluations, obtaining medical histories and physicals, diagnosing acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, and developing individualized treatment plans
• Order and interpret laboratory, x-ray, and other diagnostic tests; perform approved procedures and minor surgeries; furnish medications; and provide preventive health, family planning, and health maintenance education
• Assess basic mental health needs and provide appropriate referrals, consultation, or medication management when indicated
• Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals on complex health concerns, referrals, and continuity of care while utilizing Student Health Services and community-based resources
• Maintain timely and accurate electronic health records and ensure care complies with university policies, quality assurance and infection control protocols, HIPAA, FERPA, and applicable professional standards

Required Qualifications

• At least one year of progressively responsible professional nurse practitioner experience with demonstrated capability to carry out the responsibilities of the position
• Current certification in CPR/AED from American Red Cross or American Heart Association
• Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting with good interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to perform patient triage and handle emergent and/or potentially critical situations with speed, accuracy, and diplomacy
• Possess computer skills in both practice management and electronic health records
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff

Preferred Qualifications

• At least three years of progressively responsible professional nurse practitioner experience with demonstrated capability to carry out the responsibilities of the position
• Master's Degree or Doctorate
• Ability to provide effective work direction and to plan and organize the work of others
• Ability to assess, plan, develop, implement, and evaluate a clinical program
• Experience in splinting and/or casting

Education

• Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN)
• Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid California Registered Nurse (RN) license (must be maintained)
• California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) Nurse Practitioner certificate (must be maintained)
• Valid BRN Furnishing Certificate if delegated the authority to furnish medications (must be maintained)
• Valid DEA number and certificate if delegated the authority to furnish specific controlled substances (must be maintained)

Schedule

• Full-time, 1.0 time-base, permanent/probationary position
• 11/12 pay-plan position: works 11 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with July 2027 as the anticipated off month
• Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs
• Position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation
• Work location: on-campus at SDSU in San Diego

Compensation and Benefits

Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department's budget and equity guidelines. Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 4 ($9,773 per month). Salary step placement for internal applicants will follow the CSUEU Collective Bargaining Agreement. CSU Classification Salary Range: $9,210 to $13,416 per month (Step 1 through Step 20). Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.

Additional Requirements

• The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment
