The opportunity

Job Description

Northwestern Medicine seeks a Nurse Practitioner to provide psychiatric care as part of our Psychiatry team. This full-time position offers primarily ambulatory and outpatient psychiatric care in an independent practice setting, managing a broad patient population through new patient evaluations and follow-up visits.

Clinical Setting

You will work in an outpatient psychiatric clinic with approximately 36 patient-facing clinic hours per week. New patient appointments are scheduled for 60 minutes, and follow-up visits are 30 minutes. In addition to outpatient responsibilities, you will be expected to support Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and Behavioral Health Unit coverage as needed.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Overnight APP call coverage (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM) for the Behavioral Health Unit on a rotating basis
  • Weekend and holiday rounding coverage for the Behavioral Health Unit and Psychiatric Emergency Services as needed

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive health assessments including patient histories and physical examinations
  • Provide direct clinical care to assigned patient populations
  • Prescribe and order medications, therapies, laboratory tests, imaging, and procedures according to clinical privileges
  • Evaluate patients to determine their need for further health care
  • Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families
  • Document all care, education, and procedures in the medical record
  • Refer patients to other disciplines as appropriate
  • Serve as a consultant to other disciplines in areas of psychiatric expertise
  • Integrate research-based knowledge and clinical expertise in clinical decision-making
  • Maintain a professional image in appearance, manner, and presentation
  • Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community
  • Maintain all required certifications and continuing education for licensure and privileging
  • Serve as a role model for the "Patients First" approach
  • Participate in unit, departmental, divisional, or hospital committees and task forces as appropriate
  • Develop and participate in programs to meet continuing education needs of staff
  • Serve as a role model and preceptor to students
  • Provide formal education to internal and external groups pertinent to psychiatric specialty
  • Participate in quality improvement and research initiatives for specific patient populations

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited school or college of nursing OR Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Illinois
  • Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license in the State of Illinois
  • Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by a national certifying body approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board
  • OR Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program with current Physician Assistant license in the State of Illinois
  • Ability to apply for controlled substance license and DEA number
  • Privileged and credentialed through the Northwestern Medicine Medical Staff Office
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years of Advanced Practice Provider experience
