Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Surgical Oncology Division of Endocrine Surgery

Duke Health's Surgical Oncology Division of Endocrine Surgery is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to work collaboratively with attending physicians and other APPs in providing comprehensive surgical oncology care. This position offers a balanced mix of operative, collaborative clinic, and independent clinical responsibilities with no on-call duties.

Clinical Setting

This role is based at Duke Cancer Center in Durham, NC, with potential involvement at Duke Raleigh Cancer Center in Raleigh, NC. You will work within Duke Health's Integrated Practice, which comprises more than 110 primary and specialty outpatient clinics across North Carolina.

Responsibilities

• Perform triage, physical exams, and collect and document patient data in collaboration with Surgical Oncology attending physicians
• Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
• Order and schedule laboratory studies, diagnostic procedures, and professional consultations
• Prescribe appropriate interventions and medications
• Coordinate patient care and provide direct patient care services
• Participate in surgical cases as a first assistant or perform other delegated operative responsibilities
• Evaluate new and established patients in clinic settings
• Participate in surgical decision-making and coordinate preoperative planning
• Provide postoperative care
• Conduct independent APP clinic visits (in-person and telemedicine)
• Analyze clinical practice patterns to provide optimal medical care and increase effectiveness and efficiency
• Communicate verbally and in writing all pertinent patient information to supervising physicians, nursing staff, patient resource managers, home health agencies, and other healthcare providers
• Provide timely documentation in the electronic medical record of all relevant data, including diagnostic test results, laboratory results, patient condition and response to therapies, and communications with physician colleagues

Schedule

Monday through Friday, day shift, with flexibility to meet clinic needs. The anticipated weekly schedule generally includes:

• 1-2 operating room days per week
• Approximately 2 clinic days per week with the attending surgeon
• 1-2 independent APP clinic days per week

The weekly schedule may vary based on operative volume, patient needs, and service coverage. There are no on-call responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Nurse Practitioners: Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a Master's degree in Nursing
• Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program with a Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred

Licenses and Certifications

• BLS certification required
• Nurse Practitioners: Current or compact RN licensure in North Carolina; National certification as an NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment; RNFA certification required
• Physician Assistants: Licensed in North Carolina; Certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants

Preferred Qualifications

• 1 or more years of surgical or oncology APP experience
• Prior surgical or operative experience as an APP
