Join the Hospital Medicine Division at the Medical University of South Carolina as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in our Preoperative Clinic. This full-time position offers the opportunity to work in a busy outpatient preoperative medicine setting, evaluating and treating patients across the lifespan (ages 13 and older) in preparation for elective surgery.

Clinical Setting

You will work Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, in an outpatient preoperative clinic within the Hospital Medicine Division. You will be part of a collaborative team including anesthesia, surgery, and subspecialists, reporting directly to a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC.

Responsibilities

  • Take comprehensive patient histories and perform physical examinations
  • Evaluate and treat patients based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results
  • Assess cardiac and pulmonary risk in elective preoperative patients
  • Review and manage medications in the perioperative period
  • Coordinate with anesthesia, surgery, and subspecialists regarding medical optimization
  • Initiate referrals to other healthcare providers and consult with supervising or collaborating physicians as needed
  • Document and bill for direct care provided
  • Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice
  • Participate in quality and performance improvement activities and clinical research
  • Support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities
  • Maintain professional licenses, certifications, and continuing education as required by applicable policies and state law
  • Potentially precept advanced practice provider students and facilitate learning for new team members

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a PA, OR completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as an APRN
  • For Nurse Practitioners: Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPNP), Adult NP (ANP), or Family NP (FNP) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, current and complete prior to start date
  • If applicable, DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to the first day

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of outpatient experience as a PA, AGPNP/ANP, or FNP
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner working with a hospitalist group

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to perform job functions while standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods. You must be able to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, and reach in all directions. Full use of both hands and legs, good finger dexterity, and the ability to perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders are required. You must maintain corrected vision of at least 20/40, see and recognize objects at close range and at a distance, and work in a latex-safe environment indoors. You will frequently lift, lower, push, pull, and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, exert up to 50 pounds of force, and lift objects weighing 25 pounds from 36 inches to overhead. Infrequent work in dusty areas and confined or cramped spaces may be required. You must be physically qualified for respirator use, initially and as required.
