The opportunity

Job Description

Join the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital Medicine division as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant providing full-time inpatient care. You will work alongside 57 Hospital Medicine faculty members and 10 advanced practice providers, caring for patients across various Hospital Medicine service lines.

Clinical Setting

You will provide direct inpatient care to patients ages 13 and older in a fast-growing Hospital Medicine division at an academic medical center. The role involves evaluating and treating acutely ill or injured patients, many of whom may be unstable or technologically dependent (ventilators, drips, monitors).

Responsibilities

  • Take comprehensive patient histories and perform physical examinations
  • Evaluate and treat patients based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results
  • Initiate referrals to other healthcare providers and consult with attending or collaborating physicians
  • Document and bill for direct care provided
  • Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice
  • Participate in quality and performance improvement activities and clinical research
  • Support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities
  • Maintain active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
  • Precept advanced practice provider students and facilitate learning for new team members
  • Maintain all required licenses, certifications, and continuing education

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program with current licensure or eligibility for licensure, OR completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with current licensure or eligibility for licensure as an APRN
  • Minimum one year of provider experience as a PA or APRN
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (must be current by start date)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification for adult inpatient positions
  • DHEC and DEA license applications must be submitted prior to first day

Preferred Qualifications

  • Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) training
  • Minimum one year of experience working with a hospitalist group

Accepted Nurse Practitioner Specialties

The following NP specialties meet minimum requirements:

  • Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPNP) or Adult NP (ANP) for stable chronic disease management or primary care
  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) for stable chronic disease management across the lifespan

Schedule

  • Full-time position with 40 scheduled weekly hours
  • Shift-based work from 7am to 7pm
  • Typically follows a 7-day-on, 7-day-off schedule pattern
  • Schedule variability to accommodate department and operational needs
  • Rotation includes weekend coverage

Employment

  • Employee status through University Medical Associates (UMA)
  • Regular, full-time position
  • Salaried/Exempt under Fair Labor Standards Act
  • Reports directly to a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC

Physical Requirements

  • Continuous standing, walking, and sitting
  • Ability to bend, kneel, climb stairs, and reach in all directions
  • Full use of both hands and legs with good finger dexterity
  • Repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders
  • Frequently lift, lower, push, pull, and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted
  • Exert up to 50 lbs of force and lift 25 lbs from 36 inches to overhead
  • Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined spaces
  • Qualified for respirator use, initially and as required
  • Corrected vision of at least 20/40
  • Ability to work in a latex-safe environment and indoors
