Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Hematology Oncology

Join the Hematology Oncology Division at the Medical University of South Carolina as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. This full-time position provides direct clinical care to inpatient adults and adolescents (ages 13 and older) with malignant hematology conditions in a busy, thriving division. You will work collaboratively with a supervising physician and contribute to a dynamic team focused on evidence-based patient care and clinical excellence.

Clinical Setting

This is an inpatient position within the Hematology Oncology Division. You will care for acutely ill or potentially unstable patients, many of whom may be technologically dependent (ventilators, drips, monitors). The role includes both consult services and teaching services within internal medicine.

Responsibilities

• Take comprehensive patient histories and perform physical examinations
• Evaluate and treat patients based on clinical findings, diagnostic test results, and imaging in accordance with your practice agreement or scope of practice guidelines
• Perform bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures according to approved procedural privileges
• Initiate referrals and consult with attending or collaborating physicians as appropriate
• Document and bill for direct patient care provided
• Apply current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice
• Participate in quality improvement, performance improvement, and clinical research activities
• Support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities
• Lead discharge planning for both consult and teaching services
• Precept Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant students
• Maintain active participation in professional organizations and continuing education

Required Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a PA, OR completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as an APRN
• For NP applicants: Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPNP/ANP) or Adult NP license
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
• Current DHEC and DEA licenses (applications must be started prior to first day)
• All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date

Preferred Qualifications

• Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP/ACNP) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) certification for NP applicants
• Prior experience in malignant hematology

Schedule

• Full-time position, 40 hours per week
• Weekday day shifts, weekend day shifts, and holiday coverage
• Fewer than or equal to 2 weekends (4 shifts) in a 4-week period
• Day shift (United States of America)

Physical Requirements

• Continuous standing, walking, and sitting
• Ability to bend, kneel, climb stairs, and reach in all directions
• Full use of both hands and legs with good finger dexterity
• Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders
• Corrected vision of at least 20/40; ability to see and recognize objects at close range and at a distance
• Frequently lift, lower, push, pull, and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted
• Exert up to 50 pounds of force; lift 25 pounds from 36 inches to overhead
• Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined or cramped spaces
• Ability to work in a latex-safe environment
• Qualified for respirator use, initially and as required
• Work indoors
