Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Family Medicine

Ochsner Health is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our Family Medicine outpatient clinic. You will work in a collaborative model with residents, fellows, attending physicians, and staff to provide comprehensive primary and urgent care to clinic patients. This role involves direct patient care, teaching of residents and medical students, staff development, patient education, and discharge planning, all under the supervision of the Medical Director or approved staff physician.

Clinical Setting

You will work in an outpatient family medicine clinic within a large healthcare system. The role involves collaboration with primary care coordinators, staff nurses, discharge coordinators, and the broader clinical team to deliver coordinated patient care.

Responsibilities

• Provide primary and urgent medical management to outpatient clinic patients
• Perform emergency stabilization of critically ill patients as needed
• Teach and mentor residents and medical students
• Develop and implement staff education and development initiatives
• Provide patient education and coordinate discharge planning
• Utilize approved medical practices in all patient care delivery
• Provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety criteria appropriate to patient populations served
• Maintain inquiry toward medical practices and patient care outcomes, including potential research methodology development
• Provide education to patient families, staff, other health professionals, and the community
• Adapt communication and care approach to specific patient populations, respecting privacy and individual needs
• Remain knowledgeable of current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements applicable to the role
• Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards
• Report any known or suspected unethical conduct, patient safety concerns, or compliance issues immediately

Required Qualifications

For Nurse Practitioners:

• Master's degree in nursing
• Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in the state of practice
• Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certification (ANCC or AANPCP)
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification from the American Heart Association
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association
• Eligible for prescriptive authority in the state of practice as outlined by the State Board of Nursing

For Physician Assistants:

• Bachelor's degree in physician assistant medicine or health sciences, or graduation from an approved Physician Assistant Training Program
• Current Physician Assistant license in the state of practice
• National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification from the American Heart Association
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association
• Eligible for prescriptive authority in the state of practice as outlined by the State Board of Medical Examiners

Preferred Qualifications

• Three years of related working experience

Skills and Abilities

• Proficiency with Windows-style applications and various software packages specific to the role
• Strong computer skills and dexterity for data entry and information retrieval
• Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to present information clearly and professionally
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Working knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider policies and protocols at department and system levels
• Reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout and between facilities

Schedule and Physical Requirements

You must be able to work a flexible schedule including 24/7 availability, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties as needed.

• Routine exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue
• Potential occupational exposure to communicable diseases

The position involves medium work, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently.
