Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Critical Care, CTICU Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine

The Medical University of South Carolina seeks an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join the Critical Care, Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU) Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine team. This role provides comprehensive management of critically ill patients undergoing operative and invasive procedures. You will work collaboratively with an interprofessional team to coordinate specialty involvement, direct patient care, ensure protocol adherence, and support excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and organizational leadership.

Clinical Setting

You will work in an intensive care unit serving patients aged 13 years through end of life. The role focuses on perioperative and critical care medicine with emphasis on cardiothoracic and anesthesia-related patient populations.

Responsibilities

• Take comprehensive patient histories and perform physical examinations
• Evaluate and treat patients based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results within your scope of practice
• Perform therapeutic procedures including arterial line placement, central line placement, pulmonary artery catheter placement, chest tube removal, temporary epicardial pacing wire removal, epidural catheter removal, external pacemaker application, direct current cardioversion, lumbar puncture, bronchoscopy, intubation, paracentesis, thoracentesis, and interosseous access
• Initiate referrals to other healthcare providers and consult with attending and collaborating physicians
• Document and bill for direct care provided
• Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice
• Participate in quality and performance improvement activities and clinical research
• Support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities
• Maintain professional licenses, certifications, and continuing education as required
• Precept advanced practice provider students and facilitate learning for new team members

Schedule and Shift

• Full-time position with 40 scheduled weekly hours
• 13-hour shifts, with more than 90% of shifts scheduled for nights only
• Approximately 13 shifts per month

Required Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a PA, OR
• Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and current licensure or eligibility for licensure as an APRN in one of the following specialties:
• Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPNP/ANP)
• Adult NP (ANP)
• Family NP (FNP)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
• DHEC and DEA license applications must be initiated prior to the first day of employment

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant experience
• Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) training
• Acute care training and/or cardiology experience

Supervision and Reporting

You will be assigned a primary supervising/collaborating physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Physical Requirements

• Continuous ability to stand, walk, and sit while performing job functions
• Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, and reach in all directions
• Full use of both hands and legs with good finger dexterity
• Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders
• Qualified for respirator use, initially and as required
• Corrected vision of at least 20/40; ability to see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance
• Ability to work in a latex-safe environment and indoors
• Frequently lift, lower, push, pull, and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted
• Exert up to 50 pounds of force and lift 25 pounds from 36 inches to overhead
• Infrequent work in dusty areas and confined or cramped spaces
