Nurse Practitioner II - Emergency Department

Kaiser Permanente is seeking a Nurse Practitioner II for the Emergency Department at Oakland Hospital. In this role, you will provide direct patient care in a fast-paced emergency setting, performing assessments, physical examinations, and collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to ensure effective, high-quality patient care.

Clinical Setting

You will work in the Emergency Department at Oakland Hospital, a Kaiser Permanente facility in Oakland, California. This is a part-time position with 25 hours per week.

Responsibilities

• Conduct age-appropriate patient assessments, including history taking and physical examinations consistent with department protocol
• Perform ongoing systematic assessment and data collection focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and cognitive status
• Provide patient and family education, facilitate family involvement, and advocate for patients
• Consult with supervising physicians and other clinicians as dictated by patient need and assessment findings
• Review medical records and order diagnostic studies under established protocols
• Collaborate with physicians and other clinicians to ensure effective patient care consistent with quality indicators
• Establish and maintain communication with other healthcare providers and departments to ensure operational efficiency and continuity of care
• Build effective working relationships with healthcare team members, patients, and families while respecting cultural and ethical beliefs
• Delegate appropriately and coordinate duties of healthcare team members; evaluate effectiveness of care provided
• Demonstrate knowledge of safety principles and perform efficiently in emergency situations following established protocols
• Maintain responsibility and accountability for professional practice; participate in staff development activities
• Demonstrate knowledge of legal issues including patient confidentiality and risk management
• Participate in unit and department performance improvement activities and nursing research as requested
• Identify and solve problems effectively
• Demonstrate proficiency in computer and telecommunication use for documentation, tracking, and information conveyance
• Perform other related duties as necessary

Schedule

This is a part-time, regular position with 25 hours per week. The evening shift runs from 3:00 PM to 1:30 AM. Work schedule varies by week: Week 1 includes Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; Week 2 includes Sunday and Wednesday.

Required Qualifications

Experience

• Minimum of 6 months experience as a nurse practitioner
• Two years of experience within the past three years as a nurse practitioner providing specialized care for patients in an emergency department or urgent care setting

Education

• Master's Degree in Nursing (unless already a Kaiser Permanente employee grandfathered in prior to California Business and Professions Code requirement effective January 1, 2008)
• Completion of a Master's Program in Family Practice NP or Acute Care NP required. If caring only for specific patient populations of adult or pediatrics, then Acute Adult NP or Acute Pediatric NP required

Licenses and Certifications

• Active California Registered Nurse License
• California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number
• California Nurse Practitioner Certificate
• Basic Life Support certification
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification
• Nurse Practitioner National Certificate
• National Provider Identifier required at hire
• National Certification from one of the following organizations: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; American Credentialing Center; National Certification Corporation for Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties; or National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses

Additional Requirements

• Must meet credentialing requirements established for nurse practitioners within the Kaiser system
• Must meet requirements to apply for PTAN (Provider Transaction Account Number) at the time of hire and apply within 30 days of hire
• Must comply with requirements outlined in the appropriate collective bargaining agreement
