Nurse Practitioner Acute Care, Nights/Weekends - MICU (Medical Center)

Houston Methodist is seeking a Nurse Practitioner Acute Care for the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) to work nights and weekends. In this role, you will function as a licensed advanced practice provider delivering comprehensive patient care including diagnosis, treatment, and consultation. You will work as part of an interprofessional treatment team in an inpatient setting, performing according to Texas nursing practice standards.

You will conduct health assessments, order diagnostic tests, perform procedures within your scope of practice and credentials, and prescribe medications as appropriate. You will serve as a clinical resource and patient advocate, collaborating with physicians, nursing staff, and the interprofessional healthcare team to coordinate care, participate in rounds, and develop and implement protocols that ensure patient safety and quality outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care including initial, ongoing, and discharge assessments for defined patient populations
• Identify normal and abnormal health characteristics, develop individualized plans of care, and evaluate outcomes
• Perform invasive, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures as appropriate to your licensure and credentialed privileges
• Coordinate patient care between healthcare providers and participate in interprofessional rounds
• Conduct health education with patients about preventative care and prescribed treatments
• Demonstrate clinical leadership as a resource and consultant; identify staff development opportunities and provide coaching
• Serve as a preceptor for Nurse Practitioner students and medical residents as applicable
• Lead quality and safety improvement activities aligned with organizational goals
• Contribute to professional practice standards and lead improvements in patient safety-related processes
• Implement department strategies to achieve financial targets through timely documentation, efficient care delivery, and optimized resource allocation
• Integrate current research into practice and participate in evidence-based activities
• Communicate organizational information and clinical practice updates to staff in a respectful and positive manner

Required Qualifications

Education

• Master's degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing
• Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program

Experience

• Two years of registered nurse, advanced practice, or nurse practitioner clinical experience

Licenses and Certifications

• Active RN license from Texas Board of Nursing (PSV Compact Licensure accepted; permanent Texas license must be obtained within 60 days if establishing Texas residency)
• APRN Acute Care state license
• Magnet ANCC-recognized Acute-Care practitioner certification
• BLS (Basic Life Support) or Instructor certification from American Heart Association
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or Instructor certification from American Heart Association
• Prescriptive Authority from Texas Board of Nursing
• DEA Narcotics License from Drug Enforcement Administration (must be obtained within 6 months)

Knowledge and Abilities

• Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential job functions, particularly those impacting patient or employee safety
• Highly developed assessment, clinical, documentation, leadership, and analytical skills
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and colleagues in a customer service-focused manner
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with capacity to prioritize multiple tasks
• Ability to function independently and exercise clinical judgment in interactions with physicians, the interprofessional team, and patients and families
• Proficient time management skills
• Critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act

Schedule and Work Requirements

• Night shift (3rd shift)
• Weekends required
• On-call duties required (note: employees may be required to be on-call during emergencies such as disasters or severe weather events regardless of standard schedule)
• May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area
• Scrubs and business professional attire required
