The opportunity

Job Description

Houston Methodist is seeking a Nurse Practitioner Acute Care to provide comprehensive patient care in a critical care setting at the Willowbrook location. This position works nights and weekends in both inpatient and outpatient environments, functioning as a licensed advanced practice provider within the treatment team.

As an NP-AC, you will diagnose and treat patients, order diagnostic tests, prescribe medications as appropriate, and conduct physical examinations. You will serve as a healthcare provider while maintaining and promoting patient health according to the Texas Nurse Practice Act and Houston Methodist's Professional Practice Model.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care including diagnosis, treatment, and consultation for defined patient populations
  • Conduct health assessments (initial, ongoing, and discharge) and identify normal and abnormal health characteristics
  • Develop individualized plans of care and initiate appropriate interventions
  • Perform invasive, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures based on licensure and credentialed privileges
  • Coordinate patient care between healthcare providers and participate in interprofessional rounds
  • Demonstrate clinical leadership as a resource and patient advocate
  • Communicate organizational information and clinical practice in a respectful manner
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional healthcare team to manage and coordinate patient care
  • Serve as a preceptor for Nurse Practitioner students and medical residents as applicable
  • Conduct health assessments and evaluate care outcomes
  • Lead and initiate outcome, quality, and safety improvement activities aligned with organizational goals
  • Implement department strategies to achieve financial targets through timely documentation, decreasing length of stay, and optimizing efficiency
  • Promote quality healthcare through integration of current research into practice
  • Identify opportunities for practice changes and performance improvement
  • Provide education and serve as a clinical resource to colleagues

Clinical Setting

This position is based in critical care at Houston Methodist Willowbrook and may work in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Schedule

  • Night shift (3rd shift)
  • Weekends required
  • On-call duties required (may be required during emergencies including disasters and severe weather events)
  • May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Master's degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing
  • Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program

Experience

  • Two years of registered nurse, advanced practice, or nurse practitioner clinical experience

Licenses and Certifications

  • Active RN (Registered Nurse) license from Texas Board of Nursing (Texas PSV Compact Licensure accepted; permanent Texas license must be obtained within 60 days if establishing Texas residency)
  • APRN Acute Care state license
  • Magnet ANCC-recognized Acute-Care practitioner certification
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) or Instructor certification from American Heart Association
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or Instructor certification from American Heart Association
  • AP (Prescriptive Authority) from Texas Board of Nursing and Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
  • DEA Narcotics License from Drug Enforcement Administration (must be obtained within 6 months)

  • Demonstrate skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions, especially those impacting patient or employee safety
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers in a customer service-focused manner
  • Highly developed assessment, clinical, documentation, leadership, and analytical skills
  • Use therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional team
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with capacity to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to function independently and exercise clinical judgment

  • Critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
