Join the UTHealth Department of Neurosurgery's Spine Center as a full-time Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. In this role, you will provide advanced, evidence-based care to patients with acute, critical, and chronic spinal conditions in both clinic and hospital settings. You will work alongside physicians and healthcare professionals on a collaborative team dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care within one of Houston's leading academic healthcare environments.
Responsibilities
- Conduct complex, standardized patient care procedures requiring specialized training
- Perform independent and physician-supervised rounding on the unit
- Conduct patient evaluations and assessments, and provide appropriate treatment including monitoring and ordering medications
- Coordinate, direct, and implement the patient's plan of care
- Collect patient histories, screen for comorbidities, and provide guidance and preventative health care
- Perform physical examinations and provide episodic or problem-oriented care under physician supervision
- Order and interpret appropriate laboratory, diagnostic, and radiographic tests
- Monitor treatment programs and inform the attending physician of pertinent medical information
- Facilitate patient education relating to medical processes, medication, nutrition, and health promotion
- Assist physicians in formulating therapeutic decisions
- Maintain appropriate records and prepare charts for physician review and countersignature
- Prepare and care for supplies and equipment
- Respond to emergency situations
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) state licensure or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) by Texas Board of Nursing
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Nurse Practitioner (APRN-NP) certification by Texas Board of Nursing
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by American Heart Association
- Clinical specialty certification determined by the department (excluding Family Nurse Practitioner certification unless paired with a post-master's certification in the specialty)
- Master's Degree in Nursing as NP or Master's Degree in Nursing with completion of a post-master's Nurse Practitioner Certification Program
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in acute care neurosurgery or spine care
Physical Requirements
- Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects

- Must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas
- This is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code and Texas Government Code. Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification for hire and continued employment.
