The opportunity

Job Description

Trinity Health Oakland, a 497-bed community teaching hospital and level II trauma center, is seeking a Nurse Extern to join our clinical team. As a Nurse Extern, you will function as a collaborative member of the healthcare team, working under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. You will provide basic direct patient care utilizing principles of Relationship-based Care and support the activities of unit-based shared governance councils.

Clinical Setting

Trinity Health Oakland provides comprehensive care including cardiovascular, stroke, orthopedics, obstetrics, gynecology, and cancer care. You will work in a patient care environment that may expose you to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, and hazardous substances.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic bedside care and selected procedures under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, applying progressive knowledge and skills acquired through your nursing program
  • Perform activities of daily living (ADLs) appropriate to the patient's condition under RN direction and supervision
  • Provide individualized care consistent with the plan of care
  • Provide basic nutritional support to patients, including bed setup, assistance with feeding, and collection and documentation of intake and calorie count as appropriate
  • Report changes in patient condition to the RN in a timely manner
  • Assist with the admission process by collecting selected assessment data, applying necessary equipment, labeling patient's clothes and belongings, and informing patients and families of unit routines
  • Provide patient care that reflects respect for patients' rights, dignity, values, cultural preferences, and expressed needs, with attention to comfort, pain relief, and anxiety alleviation
  • Seek, evaluate, and incorporate feedback for performance improvement
  • Actively engage in unit-based and other committees and initiatives that promote patient and workplace safety, optimal patient outcomes, and satisfaction
  • Take personal accountability to seek out experiences to maintain skills and competence and develop your role as a progression toward becoming a Registered Nurse
  • Maintain appropriate skill level through completion of required hospital and unit-based education offerings
  • Support and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with customer service expectations

Required Qualifications

  • Currently attending and in good standing at an accredited school of nursing
  • Must maintain continuous active student status
  • Must have successfully completed two clinical nursing rotations, of which one was a Medical/Surgical rotation
  • Current BCLS (Basic Life Support Certification) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a bachelor's degree nursing program

Schedule and Employment

  • Part-time position
  • Rotating shift schedule
  • Working weekends and holidays is necessary to meet staffing needs
  • Work in other units and on different shifts may be assigned as necessary to meet staffing requirements
  • Assigned hours within your shift, starting time, or days of work are subject to change based on departmental and organizational needs

Physical Requirements

  • In a typical day, you may sit for 25%, stand for 25%, and walk for 50% of the day
  • Occasional squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, and balancing (5-10% of work time)
  • Frequent bending and stooping, and reaching above shoulder level
  • Pushing and pulling
  • Use of hands for simple and firm grasping and fine manipulating
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of patients, equipment, and other items not to exceed 51 pounds; items or patients exceeding 35 pounds will not be lifted from the floor
