Nurse Extern Tier II

The Nurse Extern Tier II provides nursing assistance and performs basic nursing procedures under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role offers clinical practice experience to enhance preparation as a future licensed nurse while working with groups of patients within an assigned nursing department.

Responsibilities

• Interpret the plan of medical care and provide input on nursing care plans under RN oversight
• Complete nursing assessment forms with RN approval
• Provide personal care including bathing, shampooing, shaving, back rubs, position changes, bed making, meal preparation, and feeding
• Answer call lights and bells promptly to determine and meet patient needs
• Collect specimens including stool, urine, and sputum
• Collect and record intake and output appropriately
• Collect and record vital signs and pertinent patient information per hospital policy
• Assist with and feed patients, including enteral feedings, and provide between-meal nourishments and fresh drinking water
• Assist with progressive ambulation using wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds
• Administer enemas, douches, and insert rectal tubes with appropriate documentation
• Apply ace bandages, elastic stockings, and sequential compression devices
• Insert catheters and feeding tubes
• Apply restraints and side rails to ensure patient safety
• Observe isolation techniques and provide direct care to patients in isolation
• Assist with ostomy care and education
• Set up orthopedic appliances
• Maintain records and report necessary information regarding patient care
• Prepare patients for surgery and other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures
• Maintain a safe environment for patient care
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Enrollment in a Board of Nursing approved School of Nursing Registered Nurse Program
• Completion of basic Nursing Fundamentals and/or Certified Nursing Assistant Course
• Current transcripts and copy of skills evaluation on basic procedures
• Recommendation letters from two instructors
