The Nurse Extern Tier I position provides nursing students with supervised clinical experience in an acute care hospital setting. Working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, you will perform basic nursing procedures, assist with patient care activities, and gain practical experience to prepare for your future role as a licensed nurse.
Responsibilities
- Provide personal care including bathing, grooming, positioning, and assisting with meals
- Answer call lights promptly and respond to patient needs
- Collect and record vital signs, specimens (urine, stool, sputum), and intake/output measurements
- Assist with patient feeding, including enteral feedings, and provide between-meal nourishments
- Assist patients with ambulation using wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds
- Administer enemas, douches, and insert rectal tubes with appropriate documentation
- Apply ace bandages, elastic stockings, and sequential compression devices
- Insert catheters and feeding tubes under RN supervision
- Apply restraints and side rails to ensure patient safety
- Provide care to patients in isolation following proper isolation techniques
- Assist with ostomy care and patient education
- Set up orthopedic appliances
- Place IV infusion devices under direct supervision and immediate bedside presence of the supervising nurse
- Complete nursing assessment forms with RN oversight and approval
- Maintain patient records and report relevant information regarding patient care
- Assist in preparing patients for surgery and diagnostic procedures
- Maintain a safe patient care environment
- Assist with patient and family education as directed by the RN
- Serve as a liaison between patients and other members of the healthcare team
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Current enrollment in a Board of Nursing approved Registered Nurse Program at an accredited school
- Successful completion of Nursing Fundamentals and/or basic Medical/Surgical clinical rotation
- Successful completion of one Medical/Surgical clinical rotation in an acute care setting
- Current transcripts and copy of skills evaluation demonstrating competency in basic procedures such as taking vital signs, giving bed baths, feeding, positioning and turning patients
- Two recommendation letters from nursing instructors
- Pass background check
- Pass post-offer physical screening and other organization requirements for new hires
