Nurse Extern - Summer 2027 - VCU Medical Center (downtown Richmond)

Join VCU Medical Center's downtown Richmond campus as a Nurse Extern for Summer 2027. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, licensed independent practitioner, or manager, you will assist with a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities in an acute care setting.

Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care

• Assist with activities of daily living
• Provide comfort care and safety support
• Assist with nutritional support
• Perform selected diagnostic and therapeutic tasks and procedures as directed

Indirect Patient Care

• Maintain a clean, safe patient environment
• Perform sterilization of equipment and supplies
• Ensure adequate inventory of supplies and equipment

Clinical Activities

• Function under the direction of an RN in providing patient care and emotional support
• Participate in nursing in-services, patient conferences, and physician rounding
• Contribute to problem-solving activities in accordance with hospital, nursing, and unit policies and procedures

Required Qualifications

• Completion of first semester junior year in a BSN program (dependent upon school curriculum), OR
• Completion of first year or a minimum of two semesters of basic nursing courses in an Associate Degree or Diploma program
• AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent (required for continued employment)

Preferred Qualifications

• Acute care experience as a nursing assistant or aide

Schedule

• Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific Nurse Manager or Practice Manager
• Schedules, including shift rotation requirements and hours of work, may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements

Compensation

• $18.25 per hour
