Nurse Extern - Summer 2027 - Tappahannock Hospital

As a Nurse Extern at Tappahannock Hospital, you will work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, licensed independent practitioner, or manager to assist with direct and indirect patient care activities. This is a summer position ideal for nursing students gaining clinical experience in an acute care setting.

Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care

• Assist with activities of daily living
• Provide comfort care and safety support
• Assist with nutritional support
• Perform selected diagnostic and therapeutic tasks and procedures as directed

Indirect Patient Care

• Maintain a clean, safe patient environment
• Perform sterilization of equipment and supplies
• Ensure adequate inventory of supplies and equipment

You will function under the direction of the RN in providing patient care, emotional support, and participating in nursing in-services, patient conferences, and physician rounding. All work will be performed in accordance with hospital, nursing, and unit policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of first semester junior year in a BSN program (dependent upon school curriculum), OR
• Completion of first year or a minimum of two semesters of basic nursing courses in an Associate Degree or Diploma program
• AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent (required for continued employment)

Preferred Qualifications

• Acute care experience as a nursing assistant or aide

Schedule

Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific Nurse Manager or Practice Manager. Schedules, including shift rotations and hours of work, may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements.

Compensation

$18.25 per hour. Actual salary offers will be based on relevant work experience, credentials, and qualifications.
