Nurse Extern

Saint Francis is seeking Nurse Externs for its shadow program designed for students in their final year of an accredited RN program. This paid externship provides hands-on clinical experience under the direct supervision of a registered nurse across multiple hospital campuses and clinical units.

Program Options

Two program tracks are available:

Winter 2026 Program: December 14th – January 9th. Requires a full-time schedule (3 shifts per week) for 4 weeks, including orientation December 14th – 18th.

Spring 2027 Program: January 4th – April 10th. Requires a part-time schedule (1 shift per week) for 14 weeks, including orientation January 4th – 8th.

Applications are accepted September 15th – October 15th. Interview scheduling and information regarding location, program, and unit preferences will be communicated within one week of application submission.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning nursing care for an assigned group of patients
• Provide direct patient care based on the registered nurse's assessment of patient needs and plan of care
• Perform technical treatments and procedures identified in the nurse extern skills checklist
• Assist the licensed nurse in recording pertinent patient data on medical records for benefit of the health team and legal documentation (progress notes must be co-signed by the licensed nurse)
• Participate in health team conferences to discuss patient needs and outcomes
• Participate in educational opportunities to increase knowledge base related to specific patient populations

Required Qualifications

• Enrolled in or entering the final year of an accredited RN program at the time the program begins
• Available to work a full-time schedule (3 shifts per week) for 4 weeks during the winter program OR a part-time schedule (1 shift per week) for 14 weeks during the spring program
• Flexible with unit placement; externs are placed in almost all areas within the hospital
• Flexible with shifts; the extern program is paid and includes differentials for evenings, nights, and weekends
• Only one externship allowed per individual

Clinical Setting

Positions are available at Saint Francis Yale, South, Vinita, and Laureate campuses in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Unit placement and shift preferences will be discussed during the interview process.

Employment Status

This position is ECB status, requiring a minimum number of worked hours per month as needed by the department with limited benefit offerings.

Special Conditions

This position has been identified as safety-sensitive under the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Use and Patient Protection Act (OMMA). The employer may lawfully refuse to hire applicants or discipline or discharge employees who test positive for marijuana, even if they have a valid license to use medical marijuana.
