Job Description

Banner Health is seeking Nurse Externs for the Med/Surg Float Resource Team at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona. This program is designed for nursing students graduating within 12 months who are ready to gain hands-on clinical experience before obtaining their RN license.

Under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor, you will practice a variety of nursing skills and procedures for which you have received didactic and clinical instruction in your nursing program. This is an unlicensed extern role that provides structured clinical experience while you complete your nursing degree.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients and assist with nursing care planning, implementation, and evaluation under direct RN supervision
  • Administer medications, adjust IV pump rates and devices, manage parenteral fluids and blood products, and perform IV flushes
  • Initiate, titrate, and discontinue oxygen therapy
  • Perform basic data collection in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Practice any skill for which you have received didactic and clinical instruction and can provide evidence of a skill checklist from your accredited nursing program
  • Spend time with the clinical case manager, observe procedures, and participate in activities relevant to your assigned patient population
  • Use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and report patient status to your supervising RN
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care
  • Follow all safety standards, compliance requirements, and facility policies
  • Perform routine, repetitive nursing activities that require no independent nursing judgment

Clinical Setting

Banner Thunderbird Medical Center is a Level I Trauma Center for adults and Tertiary Care destination serving all ages. The hospital is one of the largest in the Banner network with over 3,000 employees and was voted Best of the Best in 2023 by Banner Health. The Resource Team supports multiple clinical units including Progressive Care, Med/Surg, and Outpatient Observation.

Schedule

  • Day shift
  • Minimum 12 hours per month
  • Cannot exceed 20 hours per week

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program
  • Within 1 year of graduation at time of hire
  • Able to graduate on your initial anticipated graduation date
  • Current BLS certification
  • Must pass the Nursing State Boards within 90 days after graduation, or if a second attempt is needed, must schedule and pass within an additional 60 days from the first attempt

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional related education and/or experience

Important Program Information

This is an unlicensed extern position, not a permanent role. Employment will be impacted based on criteria outlined in the Nurse Extern Program policy. Banner Health's goal is to transition you into a New Graduate RN position in the same unit where you complete your extern experience after you graduate and obtain your RN license. You must always work under the direct supervision of a designated licensed professional registered nurse and may not perform any skill independently.
