Qualifications at a Glance

Education

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved nursing program (final year preferred) or graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Successful completion of a Medical Surgical Course that includes pharmacological concepts

This Nurse Extern position in the Progressive Care Unit offers clinical experience under the direct observation and supervision of a Registered Nurse. You will work with patients across the care continuum, developing foundational nursing skills in a structured learning environment while supporting the nursing team in delivering patient-centered care.

Responsibilities

Under the observation and guidance of the Registered Nurse, you will:

  • Complete activities of daily living, vital sign monitoring, and blood glucose monitoring
  • Collaborate in developing and evaluating plans of care based on patient health status, education and developmental needs, and patient/family preferences
  • Evaluate patient responses to interventions and communicate observations and patient needs to the Registered Nurse
  • Administer medications as delegated by the Registered Nurse, with clinical judgment and skill proficiency evaluated prior to administration
  • Develop delegation skills appropriate to Health Unit Coordinators, Nursing Assistants, and other technical roles on the unit
  • Manage an increased patient load while applying time management principles
  • Collect and synthesize relevant patient data to accurately identify patient status and needs
  • Participate in emergency situations under appropriate Registered Nurse supervision, performing activities you have demonstrated knowledge and skill in
  • Perform patient positioning and transporting duties, including lifting and pushing/pulling using proper technique
  • Provide age-appropriate care demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan, assess patient data, and interpret information to identify age-specific requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved nursing program (final year preferred) or graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Successful completion of a Medical Surgical Course that includes pharmacological concepts
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities and workload

Physical Requirements

You must be able to perform the following throughout your shift:

  • Sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist
  • Lift up to 20 lbs. over the head
  • Carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance
  • Push/pull with 30 lbs. of force
  • Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present
  • Use foot pedals on carts or machines
  • Maintain functional vision and hearing
  • Operate all equipment necessary to perform the job

Working Conditions

You will be exposed on a continuous basis to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards as well as blood and body fluids. Protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
