Nurse Extern PRN

Valley Regional Medical Center is seeking a Nurse Extern PRN to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care under the supervision of registered nurses. As a Nurse Extern, you will assist the nursing staff in providing patient care and maintaining a safe, clean, and well-organized patient care environment. This role is ideal for nursing students seeking practical experience while completing their degree.

Clinical Setting

Valley Regional Medical Center is a 215+ bed facility serving Brownsville, TX and the surrounding Rio Grande Valley communities. The hospital is designated as an Advanced Level III Trauma Center and Advanced Primary Stroke Center, with specialized services including heart and vascular care, women's services with labor and delivery, and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Responsibilities

• Provide essential patient care by assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring patient comfort and hygiene
• Perform nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care, and specimen collection as you gain experience and demonstrate competency
• Document care accurately and communicate timely updates with the nursing team to ensure seamless, coordinated patient care
• Help patients and families understand their care plans and provide guidance for health and recovery
• Maintain clean and safe patient areas by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and organizing the environment
• Engage in learning opportunities and partner with your supervisor or preceptor to develop your personal career development plan

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in good standing in an accredited school of nursing in an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree Program
• Completion of Fundamentals or Foundations of Nursing course
• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
• Ability to work 24 productive hours in a month

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 6 months remaining prior to graduation
