This is a PRN (as-needed) Nurse Extern position in Medical Surgical nursing at McLeod Health. As a Nurse Extern, you will work under the supervision of licensed nursing staff to provide direct patient care and support to patients in a medical-surgical setting. This role is ideal for nursing students who have completed at least one semester of a nursing program and are seeking clinical experience.
Responsibilities
- Recognize normal signs of growth, development, and aging appropriate to the patient population
- Initiate and maintain patient hygiene and cleanliness, including the patient's environment and unit environment
- Understand and recognize appropriate storage and safety of medications, including large volume IVs, alcohol, saline, and prepackaged medication kits
- Conduct hourly rounds using Service Excellence Standards
- Promote and foster an environment of comfort and safety for patients and visitors
- Perform or assist with nutritional and hydration interventions, including feeding, providing fluids, water, or snacks
- Identify and communicate appropriate patient data to members of the interdisciplinary team
- Collect and record patient-related data through direct care tasks
- Demonstrate continued professional growth through goal-setting and participation in evidence-based tasks
- Utilize appropriate health and safety practices to protect both patients and staff
- Perform general transportation and courier duties as directed
Required Qualifications
- Completed at least one semester of a nursing program
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Occupational Risk Assessment membership
