This program eases the transition from nursing student to practicing nurse by providing hands-on experience in patient care delivery within an academic medical center setting.

Program Overview

The nurse extern program runs for 8 weeks beginning June 1, 2027, with a schedule of five 8-hour shifts per week (40 hours total). You will follow your preceptor's work schedule and assist in providing nursing care for their patients. In addition to clinical practice, you will attend 8 didactic educational sessions during your rotation to reinforce theoretical knowledge and professional development.

Clinical Setting

Penn Ob/Gyn Chester County is located at 1055 Andrew Drive, West Chester, and is part of Penn Medicine's Primary Care and Specialty Practices. You will work within an obstetrics and gynecology practice at a leading academic medical center.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the provision of nursing care for assigned patients under preceptor supervision
  • Demonstrate awareness of continuous quality improvement (CQI) methods and data use to identify problems and opportunities for safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable care
  • Evaluate and integrate evidence-based practice with preceptor clinical expertise and patient and family preferences for optimal health care delivery
  • Observe and learn collaboration and innovative, systems-thinking approaches to evidence-based problem solving and decision making
  • Recognize patients as partners in providing compassionate, coordinated care based on respect for their preferences, values, and needs
  • Minimize risk of harm to patients, families, providers, and self through system effectiveness and individual performance
  • Engage effectively in cooperation, coordination, and collaboration within inter- and intra-professional teams, including virtual teams
  • Utilize appropriate information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making
  • Perform duties in accordance with Penn Medicine values, policies, and procedures
  • Complete other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Required Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, entering your final year of study
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Completion of at least one medical-surgical clinical rotation
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0, with a 3.0 GPA maintained in all nursing major courses
