Job Description

Join Henry Ford Health as a Nurse Extern on our 36-bed Orthopedic and Neurosurgery Unit. In this contingent position, you will work under the direction of a Registered Nurse to provide patient care support on a day shift schedule (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM). You will assist in caring for patients undergoing elective or emergent orthopedic surgery, including total joint replacement, fracture fixation, and spinal fusion/decompression procedures. The unit also operates an Ortho Rapid Recovery program for same-day discharge patients, working closely with Physical Therapy and physicians.

Responsibilities

  • Perform specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs under RN supervision
  • Provide input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care
  • Respond to emergent situations according to established procedures
  • Participate in continuing education

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, OR currently enrolled in the Henry Ford Health Early College Program with completion of two clinical rotations at an accredited nursing school
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing
  • Completion of two clinical rotations, one of which must be Med/Surg in an acute care setting
  • Current Health Care Provider Certification

Conditions of Employment

  • You must actively remain enrolled in your nursing program and successfully complete each course
  • You must provide transcripts to your Nurse Manager after each semester or term
  • You must provide a copy of your plan of work to your Nurse Manager
  • If you do not meet your academic institution's standard for continued enrollment, your employment as an extern will be rescinded
  • This position is time-limited: maximum 12 months for ADN programs or maximum 24 months for BSN programs (adjusted for part-time BSN programs)
  • Successful completion of a 180-day introductory period is required to achieve knowledge of policies relative to job duties and patient care unit operations
