The opportunity

Job Description

UMC Health System's Resource Pool seeks Nursing Technicians to provide supplemental staffing support across the hospital. As a Nurse Tech, you will work under the supervision of a licensed nurse, providing basic patient care including observing patients, recording vital signs, and reporting changes in patient condition. You will be assigned to various nursing units throughout the hospital based on clinical competency and identified needs, potentially working in Med-Surg, Critical Care, or other clinical areas.

Clinical Setting

The Resource Pool department assists with staffing needs throughout the hospital by providing supplemental nursing personnel to support both licensed and non-licensed staff. Patient populations and clinical assignments vary based on area staffed. Med-Surg assignments may include units 3E, 3W, GT/SCU, 4E, 4W, Cardiac ICCU, 5W, Med-Surg ICCU, SWCC, OPS, and Endoscopy. Critical Care assignments may include MICU, TSICU, BICU, CVICU, Neuro ICU, COPS, Endoscopy, SWCC, EC, and PACU.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality patient care adhering to safety practices and proper clinical documentation
  • Observe patients and record vital signs
  • Report any changes in patient condition to supervising nurse
  • Perform delegated tasks as assigned by a licensed nurse
  • Maintain working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies
  • Contribute to unit-specific strategic plans and quality initiatives
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development activities
  • Assist with patient safety and quality outcomes monitoring
  • Interact with ancillary departments to facilitate a multidisciplinary approach to patient care

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an RN nursing program and have completed at least half of your nursing curriculum and clinical experience
  • Clinical instructor completion of Nurse Tech skills validation form
  • Current nursing transcript (unofficial or official)
  • Current BLS certification from American Heart Association

Physical Requirements

This position involves medium-demand work. You will be standing and walking most of the time on duty. The role requires lifting and pushing patients, carts, and wheelchairs. Good tactile sensations are necessary for checking patients. You must be able to talk and hear to converse with patients and staff members. Near visual acuity is required for accurate reading of gauges and thermometers and for recording on patients' charts.

Schedule and Working Conditions

  • PRN (as needed) position with varying hours
  • Hours of duty may be irregular with coverage of various shifts
  • Work is conducted inside the hospital
  • High-risk exposure to bloodborne pathogens
