UMC Health System is seeking Nurse Externs to join our Resource Pool, a supplemental staffing department that supports nursing units throughout the hospital. As a Nurse Extern (Nurse Technician), you will provide basic patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse, working across multiple clinical settings including medical-surgical units, critical care departments, and specialty areas.
The Resource Pool department staffs registered nurses, nurse technicians, nurse aides, and certified nursing assistants to meet the dynamic needs of our hospital. Depending on your assignment, you may work in medical-surgical areas such as general floors, cardiac units, or surgical centers, or in critical care settings including the MICU, TSICU, BICU, CVICU, Neuro ICU, or PACU.
Responsibilities
- Provide quality patient care adhering to safety practices and proper clinical documentation
- Observe patients and record vital signs
- Report any changes in patient condition to the supervising nurse
- Perform delegated tasks as directed by a licensed nurse
- Maintain working knowledge of organizational and nursing policies
- Contribute to unit-specific quality initiatives and strategic plans
- Participate in staff meetings and professional development activities
- Interact with ancillary departments to support a multidisciplinary approach to patient care
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an RN nursing program and have completed at least half of your nursing curriculum and clinical experience
- Clinical instructor completion of Nurse Tech skills validation form
- Current BLS certification from American Heart Association
- Copy of current nursing transcript (unofficial or official acceptable)
Physical Requirements
- Work is of medium physical demand
- Standing and walking most of the time during shifts
- Lifting and pushing patients, carts, and wheelchairs
- Good tactile sensations for checking patients
- Ability to talk and hear to converse with patients and staff
- Near visual acuity for reading gauges, thermometers, and patient charts
Schedule and Working Conditions
- PRN (as needed) position with varying hours
- Hours may be irregular with coverage of various shifts
- Work is conducted indoors
- High-risk exposure to bloodborne pathogens
