Texas Health Fort Worth is seeking a Nurse Extern for the 22-bed Neuro Surgical Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) on a PRN night shift basis. This role provides an excellent opportunity for nursing students to gain hands-on experience in a high-acuity critical care environment while supporting the nursing team in direct patient care.
The Neuro ICU is a high-performing department specializing in stroke care, multi-system organ failure (MSOF), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), ventilator-dependent patients, and all forms of life support. The unit also supports the hospital's brain tumor and spine programs. The department maintains a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio and has been recognized as a Beacon Reward Recipient three times.
Schedule
- PRN (as needed) night shift
- 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM

Responsibilities
- Provide patient care and support according to the plan of care, assisting with activities of daily living based on patient and family preferences
- Serve as a patient advocate
- Collect patient data, identify and report significant findings to the nurse, and communicate per department expectations including ethical and legal concerns
- Assist in patient admissions, transfers, and discharges while ensuring accurate and appropriate documentation
- Perform procedures safely and proficiently, enter orders when applicable, and take action to reduce or eliminate patient risk
- Maintain a clean and safe environment
- Work in partnership with nurses and other disciplines to adapt care for diverse populations, incorporating cultural and religious needs
- Demonstrate adaptability to changing schedules or workloads and welcome new team members
- Use interpersonal skills to foster a supportive work environment
- Maintain and enhance care skills, seek supervision when needed, and participate in process improvement
- Adhere to National Patient Safety Goals and personnel policies
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One of the following upon hire:
- Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) certification, OR
- Completion of a PCT (Patient Care Technician) training program, OR
- Junior I or higher level professional nursing student status with proof of completion of nursing fundamentals
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification prior to providing independent patient care, maintained quarterly
- Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training, maintained annually within 90 days
