Nurse Extern - Mother/Baby - Per Diem / Flex - Variable Shift

Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas is seeking a Nurse Extern for the Mother/Baby unit on a per diem, flexible basis with variable shifts. This role provides designated patient care to assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, working in accordance with physicians' orders and approved patient care standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide designated patient care to assigned patients based on previously acquired nursing skills, with consultation and under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
• Record graphics, intake and output, and activities of daily living (ADLs) accurately in the computer and flow sheet
• Communicate and interact effectively with patients and their families, demonstrating sensitivity to psychosocial needs and implementing measures to promote a safe environment
• Demonstrate knowledge of the usual and stable baseline conditions of the Mother/Baby patient population and report objective relevant observations to the licensed nurse to assist in care planning
• Institute appropriate nursing interventions to stabilize a patient's condition and prevent complications
• Utilize equipment safely and effectively in the provision of patient care services, adapting equipment usage to the age and general condition of the patient as indicated
• Assist in cleaning, sanitation, and tracking of all equipment and supplies used in the unit and adhere to all guidelines regarding use of cleaning products

Required Qualifications

• Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program
• Successful completion of at least one clinical rotation
• BLS Certification
• Department-specific competencies obtained within six months of hire
