Nurse Extern- Mother Baby

UVA Community Health is seeking Nurse Externs for the Mother Baby unit. This is a non-exempt position where you will work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse in an inpatient setting, providing patient care and administrative support to mothers and newborns during the postpartum period.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with personal care as needed for optimal recovery during hospitalization
• Perform basic nursing skills as delegated by an RN in accordance with policy and procedures
• Promote patient health and wellness
• Provide for a safe environment and safe delivery of care
• Perform administrative support functions
• Maintain necessary skills and competencies

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled nursing student who will graduate between December 2025 and May 2027
• BSN students who have completed their 3rd year, or ASN students who have completed their 1st year
• Completion of Life Support Training as outlined in the Life Support Training Policy

Employment Terms

• Students may remain employed as a Nurse Extern until graduation completion
• Following graduation and successful board completion, you will need to apply for open positions and continue through the standard hiring process

Physical Demands

• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and bending/stooping
• Frequent repetitive body movements
• Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills
• Attention to detail and ability to write legibly
• Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 20 lbs occasionally

Additional Requirements

• May require use of safety equipment such as HEPA mask for infection prevention
• On-call responsibilities as directed
• Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed
