Nurse Extern - Medical Surgical

As a Nurse Extern in Medical Surgical nursing, you will provide basic and intermediate nursing care for assigned patient groups under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. You will work across multiple clinical settings caring for diverse patient populations, from adolescents through geriatric patients, depending on unit assignment.

Clinical Settings

You may be assigned to work in one or more of the following areas:

• General Nursing Units: Care for patients age 15 years and older
• Special Care Areas: Care for patients age 15 years and older with high-risk conditions
• Maternal Child Units: Labor and Delivery care for patients with pregnancy-related conditions, or Nursery care for newborns until discharge
• Pediatric Units: Care for patients from newborn through age 18
• GI Lab Unit: Care for patients beginning at age 24 months through adult
• Chemical Dependent Unit and Psychiatric Unit: Care for adult patients and families with a holistic approach to emotional and behavioral health
• Emergency Unit: Care for presenting patients of all ages, including pediatric and high-risk adult patients
• Surgical Services: Care for patients from newborn through geriatric populations

Responsibilities

• Provide basic and intermediate nursing care based on your competence level
• Complete established competencies for the position within the designated introductory period
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing
• Completed one semester of clinicals in an RN program
• Active healthcare provider Basic Life Support certification on hire (American Red Cross or American Heart Association); must obtain AHA Healthcare Provider BLS within 60 days of hire
• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training obtained within 60 days of hire or transfer if assigned to the Emergency Department or Behavioral Health areas; must complete NVCI training before working as a constant observer
