Nurse Extern Medical Surgical Progressive Care

Banner Health is seeking Nurse Externs for the Medical/Surgical Progressive Care unit at Banner - University Medical Center South in Tucson, Arizona. This is an excellent opportunity for nursing students within 12 months of graduation to gain hands-on clinical experience under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor before obtaining your RN license.

The 5 South West unit is a brand new 17-bed Medical/Surgical and Progressive Care unit caring for patients with multiple comorbidities including sepsis, wound infections, respiratory conditions, and mental health needs. You will be part of creating and growing this unit from the ground up while working alongside a close-knit interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

Under direct supervision of a licensed RN preceptor, you will:

• Assess patients and assist with patient care planning, implementation, and evaluation
• Administer medications and adjust IV pump rates or devices
• Manage parenteral fluids, blood products, and IV flushes
• Initiate, titrate, and discontinue oxygen therapy
• Perform basic data collection in the electronic medical record
• Practice any clinical skill for which you have received didactic and clinical instruction and can provide evidence of completion from your accredited nursing program
• Spend time with the clinical case manager and observe procedures relevant to your patient population
• Use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and report patient status
• Collaborate with physicians, patients, families, and other healthcare providers
• Follow all safety standards, compliance requirements, and facility policies

All nursing care activities must be performed under direct supervision of a licensed RN. You may not perform any skill independently.

Clinical Setting

Banner - University Medical Center South is a comprehensive academic medical center with an Emergency Department, state-designated trauma center, and Behavioral Health Pavilion. The hospital is an Arizona Department of Health Services-accredited Cardiac Receiving Center and a Nurses Improving Care for Health system Elders-designated senior-friendly hospital. Physicians are full-time faculty of the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson.

Schedule

• Day shift
• Minimum 12 hours per month
• Cannot exceed 20 hours per week

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program
• Within 12 months of graduation at time of hire
• Able to graduate on your initial anticipated graduation date
• Current BLS certification
• Must pass the Nursing State Boards within 90 days after graduation, or if a second attempt is needed, must schedule and pass within an additional 60 days from the first attempt

Program Details

This is an unlicensed Nurse Extern position designed to expand your clinical experience through competency assessment. Employment is not permanent and will be impacted based on criteria outlined in the Nurse Extern Program policy. Banner's goal is for you to continue as a New Graduate RN in the same unit after you graduate and obtain your RN license.
