Job Description

Banner Health's Nurse Extern program offers nursing students within 12 months of graduation the opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor before obtaining their RN license. This position is designed to bridge the gap between nursing school and professional practice, with the goal of transitioning externs into New Graduate RN roles upon licensure.

You will work on 4 South, a 40-bed medical-surgical unit at Banner University Medical Center South that cares for post-surgical and medical patients with multiple comorbidities, as well as psychiatric patients requiring medical treatment. The unit is connected to the Behavioral Health Pavilion and is working toward Magnet designation, Level 3 Trauma status, and Primary Stroke designation. The team includes both new graduate and experienced RNs who provide strong support for developing clinicians.

Responsibilities

Under direct supervision of a licensed RN preceptor, you will:

  • Assess patients and collect basic patient data in the electronic medical record
  • Administer medications and adjust IV pump rates or devices
  • Manage parenteral fluids, blood products, and IV flushes
  • Initiate, titrate, and discontinue oxygen therapy
  • Participate in patient care planning, implementation, and evaluation
  • Practice any clinical skill for which you have received didactic and clinical instruction and can provide evidence of completion from your accredited nursing program
  • Spend time with the clinical case manager, observe procedures, and participate in activities relevant to your patient population
  • Identify and report significant patient observations to your RN preceptor
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members in planning and modifying patient care
  • Follow all safety standards, compliance requirements, and facility policies

Important: You may not perform any skill independently or without direct supervision of your assigned RN preceptor.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled in an accredited nursing program (Bachelor's or Associate Degree in Nursing)
  • Within 12 months of graduation at time of hire
  • Able to graduate on your initially anticipated graduation date
  • Current BLS certification
  • Ability to pass the Nursing State Boards within 90 days of graduation, or within an additional 60 days if a second attempt is needed

Schedule

  • Day shift
  • Minimum 12 hours per month; cannot exceed 20 hours per week
  • This is not a permanent position and employment will be impacted based on criteria outlined in the Nurse Extern program policy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional related education and/or experience
